How We Make TypeOfThings
TypeOfThings helps you see the differences between related things. This page explains how we choose collections, make our images and check facts.
How we choose collections
Each topic starts with a question people often ask, such as which types of tigers there are, or how to tell common trees apart. A collection shows a curated selection of examples. For broad subjects such as sharks or trees it is not a complete list, and we add more examples over time. For smaller subjects with a clear, fixed membership we aim to cover every member, and we say so on the page.
Names and classifications
Where scientists disagree, or a classification has changed, we say which one we follow. For example, tigers have traditionally been divided into six living subspecies, but many scientists now group them into just two. We give scientific names as they appear in the sources we use.
How we make our images
Our collection and type images are illustrations made with the help of AI image tools. A realistic-looking picture is not proof of how an animal, plant or machine really looks, so before an image is published we check that:
- every label is spelled correctly and matches the page;
- the number of examples is right, and none are merged, duplicated or cut off;
- visible features such as colours, markings, leaves or engines match reliable descriptions;
- there is no stray text, logo or watermark.
If an image could mislead you about a defining feature, we replace it. Where the visible differences between types are small, we say so in the text rather than exaggerate them in the picture.
How we check facts
We check facts against reputable sources: scientific and conservation organisations for animals, botanical references for plants, and manufacturers and aviation references for aircraft. Once a page has been checked, its sources and the date of the check are listed at the bottom of the page. Some newer pages are still being checked.
Corrections
If you spot a mistake, we want to know. We correct errors as soon as we can and update the page.
